On fan appreciation day, Ace Walker gave Winnipeg Goldeyes fans plenty to appreciate. The Goldeyes starter took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Fish blanked the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-0 Sunday afternoon in front of a large crowd of 7110. Walker, who struck out 11 Fargo batters in the game, watched Carlo Cota hit a single to left field to break up the no-no. It's the first time in franchise history that a Goldeyes pitcher has tossed a one-hitter. Walker also matched a Winnipeg record with six consecutive strikeouts in the game. Winnipeg opened the scoring in the third inning when Brett Wallace touched home plate on a Price Kendall single and Donzell McDonald scored on a Juan Diaz single. Justin Justice hit a solo home run in the fourth to complete the scoring. Sean Gregory took the loss for Fargo after going three and two-thirds innings. The win is the Goldeyes 21st victory at Canwest Park this season, which matches a team record for the fewest home wins in a season. Winnipeg is five games back of the Gary SouthShore RailCats for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League. The Goldeyes tragic number that would see them eliminated from post-season contention is two. The Fish begin a season-ending six-game road trip Tuesday night against the Rockford RiverHawks at Road Ranger Stadium.

Owl Outlook is back for episode 2, with today focusing on the newcomers on the Temple Owls football team, featuring interviews with wide receiver Rod Streater as well as defensive end Taray Carey. The Temple Football team once again reeled in one of the conference's top recruiting classes in 2010. At quarterback, Connor Reilly (Fairfax, VA) was the Owls' only signal caller to sign in February, though he will be joined by walk-on Bret Gillespie (Downingtown, PA). At running back, Myron Miles enters the fold after originally being committed to Vanderbilt of the SEC. He is also joined in the backfield by walk-on Chris Burrell of Don Bosco Prep (NJ). The wide receiver position may have seen the most improvement, with the additions of Streater (Alfred State - formerly of Burlington Township High School), 6'6'' wideout Deon Miller (Fork Union Military Academy) and the fleet-footed Darryl Shine (Fullterton College). Walk-on Brett Pierce (Sicklerville, NJ) will be in the mix as well. At tight end, the Owls added an imposing target to the passing game in 6'5, 240 lb Tyler Johnson (Lakeland Regional HS). The offensive line, which was voted as the team's MVP at the 2009 Award's Banquet, welcomes a couple of new faces as well. Among those is Big 33 participant Adam Metz (Lower Dauphin HS), who at 6'5, 310 lbs already looks the part. He's not the only intimidating addition up front however, with Joe Cenatiempo (6'7, 315 lbs, Garnet Valley HS), Elijah Grant (6'6, 340 lbs, Fork Union ...
Even though he was the hero, Vince Harrison called it "a complete team victory," and he was dead right. Friday night, in front of 6184 at Canwest Park, the Winnipeg Goldeyes came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Kansas City T-Bones 5-4 in 10 innings. With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 37-34 on the season and are now tied with Joliet for third in the Northern League, only five games back of first-place Kansas City and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Harrison delivered the walk-off single, but this was indeed a complete team victory. "No doubt about it, everybody contributed to this one," Harrison said. "The really important thing was that (starter) (Jason) Mackintosh only gave up four runs and then (Ian) Thomas, (Bobby) Korecky and (Corey) Bass shut them down. When you play Kansas City, you know they're gonna get a lot of good swings and the guys out of our bullpen did a great job." The big blow came in the 10th. Kevin West led off with a single, Juan Diaz fouled out, Luis Alen doubled to put runners on second and third. Relief pitcher Casey Hodges, the former Goldeye, then walked Justin Justice intentionally to get to Harrison with the bases loaded and the Goldeyes third baseman delivered a solid single to left to score West with the winning run. "He threw me a fastball," Harrison said. "But he hit his spots with a couple of pitches and I was able to foul them off to get it to 3-2. He eventually had to throw me that fastball. "This was a big win for us. We lost Wes (Long ...
Bloomberg Television's Michele Steele and Bloomberg Sports Fantasy Analyst Rob Shaw shifty the conversation from the players who were traded to the players who will now enjoy an opportunity to play everyday now that spots have opened up after the trade deadline. HOUSTON -- Two days after sending Roy Oswalt to the Phillies, the Astros continued their wholesale youth movement on Saturday and completed another major trade by sending five-time All-Star first baseman Lance Berkman and cash to the Yankees in exchange for two Minor Leaguers. Berkman, who spent his entire 11-year Major League career with the Astros and is considered one of the franchise's greatest players, will be in uniform on Saturday night for the Yankees when they face the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Astros received pitcher Mark Melancon, 25, and infielder Jimmy Paredes, 21, from the Yankees and will send $4 million to the Yankees, according to a person close to the negotiations. • Deadline MLBlog • Full coverage The deal was all but completed on Friday, but it couldn't be announced until Saturday afternoon. Berkman spent his entire career with the Astros since being selected in the first round of the 1997 Draft and ranks in the top three in franchise history in batting average (.296), home runs (326), runs scored (1008), walks (1040) and RBIs (1090). He was hitting .245 with 13 homers and 49 RBIs in 85 games this year. "I never thought I would be in this position -- never had to go through it," Berkman said on Friday. "It's unsettling, because you just don't know what's going to happen and there are all sorts of possibilities. I guess in one sense it's good because there are teams that want me to play for them, particularly in a down season." Houston has ...
