This excerpt from Carlin's 1992 monologue is popular among "conservatives" who seek any excuse to snub conservation or pigeonhole environmentalists as hypocritical extremists. Since Carlin was widely considered a liberal, they think he committed a Freudian slip and admitted that nature really isn't worth our concern. The Right gloats over this clip with their usual small-minded interpretation of big issues. Die-hard fans of Carlin claim he was on the mark; too hip to get it wrong. But, morally and aesthetically, Carlin is way off base, claiming that extinctions are a natural occurrence at today's rates, and that environmentalists really don't care about nature. It's unclear where he got some of his figures. This was also recorded before scientists officially declared global warming a major man-made threat (Carlin in later years didn't seem to be an AGW-denier). In other skits, he showed respect for nature, plus a good deal of misanthropy, but here he twists context and seems to be chasing a point for shock value without thinking it through. If Carlin was any kind of environmentalist, he was a bleak one who lacked aesthetic values. The problem with the environment is the quality and viability of life TODAY, not just the resilience of natural processes over eons.
